River Kennet

The River Kennet meanders through Wiltshire like something out of a pastoral painting, and the stretch near Pewsey is where it properly shows off. It's a chalk stream - which means the water runs crystal clear if you catch it on a decent day, and the banks are lined with willows that have probably been there longer than most villages.

Walkers get the most from this one. The river path is straightforward and deeply peaceful, threading through water meadows where you'll spot kingfishers if you're patient enough to look. It's not a dramatic walk - no proper hills to speak of - but that's rather the point. This is Wiltshire understatement at its best.

Families with younger kids will find an hour here sufficient. There's something to look at, the water's gentle, and you can paddle if the weather's kind. Older walkers and anyone with a camera will linger considerably longer. The light on the water in late afternoon is worth timing for.

It's completely free, and you can access it whenever you fancy. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared. Spring and early summer are lovely - the vegetation's lush but not overwhelming yet.
