River Wye, Hoarwithy

The River Wye curves through Hoarwithy like it's got somewhere important to be, though there's absolutely no rush once you're here. This is proper river-watching country - you get the water itself, banks lined with ancient woodland, and views that shift depending on where you stand and what the light's doing. The village sits right on the bend, so you can park up near Hereford (about 6 miles away) and walk down to the water's edge in minutes.

It's the kind of place walkers come for, particularly those doing the Wye Valley Walk or just after a gentle afternoon ramble along the towpath. The river's wide enough here to feel proper, and if you time it right at dusk, the light on the water makes the effort worthwhile. There's no formal visitor infrastructure - no café, no car park with facilities - so come prepared. Summer weekends pull families wanting to paddle and chuck stones, which is fine, though you'll find it quieter on weekday mornings.

Stay at Tresseck Campsite practically on your doorstep - less than five minutes' walk - and you're sorted for the week. Two hours is decent for a walk and a sit-down; a full day if you're the meandering type. It's not flashy or famous, but that's rather the point. The Wye does quiet brilliance better than most.
