Roadends Wood

Roadends Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Penrith - nothing fancy, just mature trees, forest floor paths, and the kind of quiet you don't get many places these days. It's the sort of place you can wander through for an hour or so without seeing another soul, which given how rammed the Lake District gets, is rather nice.

The woodland itself is straightforward walking territory. You'll find yourself threading through beech and oak, with enough variation in the paths to keep things interesting without requiring a navigation degree. It's not a destination that demands a full day - most people will get what they came for in ninety minutes - but that makes it ideal as a half-day venture if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Carrock or Pasturewood.

Families with young walkers will find this manageable, though it's a bit dull for toddlers who need constant stimulation. Serious hikers might find it too compact, but for those wanting a gentle morning among the trees before heading into the fells proper, it works a treat. Dog walkers absolutely rate it.

Access appears unrestricted and costs nothing. Head there early if you can - the woodland's small enough that midday can bring a crowd, especially weekends. It pairs well with a broader Penrith-area itinerary. If you're staying at Riverside Tourer Park or one of the en-suite glamping pods, it's close enough for a walk before breakfast without faffing about.
