Robertson’s Mudpond

The first time I clapped eyes on Robertson's Mudpond, I'll admit - I wasn't entirely sure what I was looking at. It's not some grand natural wonder or a Instagram-ready beauty spot. What you've got here is a proper industrial heritage site near Stockton-on-Tees, a mudpond created from the old ironworks and steelmaking that once defined this corner of County Durham. The water's dark, the banks are steep in places, and it's more atmospheric than conventionally pretty.

That said, there's something rather compelling about it. This is geology you can actually touch - layers of industrial history quite literally stacked in front of you. Walkers appreciate it for that reason, and anyone with a genuine interest in how the north used to work will find it worth an hour of their time. It's not a place for young kids expecting swings and ducks, but teenagers studying industrial heritage or adults keen on industrial archaeology will get proper value from a visit.

The setting's excellent if you're based at Donnewell Farm Caravan and Motorhome Club CL, just under three miles away - a quick drive to stretch your legs without trekking halfway across the county. Fair warning: facilities are minimal to non-existent, so come prepared and bring sturdy boots if you plan to explore the edges closely. Best visited when the light's good enough to actually see what you're looking at.
