Rock Plantation

A thick cluster of conifers rises from the moorland just outside Richmond, and that's Rock Plantation - a working forest that feels properly wild despite being so close to town. The trees are dense enough that you lose the sky, which sounds gloomy but actually isn't. There's a real sense of being somewhere remote, even though you're minutes from the market square.

It's a walker's spot, no question. The paths wind through the plantation and out onto the surrounding open moorland, so you can do anything from a quick thirty-minute loop to a proper half-day expedition depending on what appeals. The terrain's decent underfoot most of the time, though it can get boggy after rain - standard Yorkshire moorland fare. There's no visitor centre or facilities as such, so come prepared.

Families will find it works if the kids are happy tramping through trees and aren't after entertainment beyond nature itself. Older children who like a bit of independence will enjoy exploring properly. Younger ones might get bored after an hour, to be honest.

Stay at Hewn Yorkshire just down the road and you've got a solid base for exploring this corner of North Yorkshire. The plantation pairs well with Richmond itself - the castle's worth a few hours - or you could link it with walks across the wider moorland. It's free to access and worth the visit if you're already in the area, though it's not the sort of thing you'd specifically plan a trip around.
