Rockmoor Down

The beech woods at Rockmoor Down feel properly ancient, the kind of place where you half expect to turn a corner and find a hermit. It's a straightforward forest walk near Newbury - nothing dramatic, but deeply satisfying if you're after some proper woodland air without the crowds of more famous spots.

The trees are the thing here. Old beeches create that cathedral-like canopy locals rave about, filtering the light into something soft and golden in the right seasons. Walking trails criss-cross through, ranging from gentle loops to longer pushes deeper into the woods. In autumn it's decent for leaf-spotting; spring brings bluebells that draw the photographers. Summer's fine too, just busier.

It works well for families who don't need visitor facilities or a visitor centre with a cafe - kids will either love the freedom of the open woodland or get bored after forty minutes depending on their temperament. Serious walkers treating it as part of a wider Newbury area loop will find it rewarding. The terrain isn't challenging, which is both its strength and limitation.

No fees as far as anyone can tell, open when daylight is. Allow two to three hours for a decent circuit without rushing. If you're based at Hollington Park Glamping nearby, it's an easy side trip - close enough for a morning wander before doing something else, far enough that you actually feel like you've gone somewhere. Winter's honestly the better season here; the skeletal trees let you see the landscape properly, and mud is part of the charm.
