Rocky Island

Rocky Island sits just off the coast near Whitley Bay, and it's one of those places that catches you off guard - a proper little museum squeezed into what feels like a geological oddity rather than a purpose-built visitor centre. The island itself is the draw: you're looking at exposed rock formations that tell the story of how this corner of Northumberland was shaped, with displays that make sense of what you're actually seeing rather than just pointing at stones and hoping for the best.

It works best if you're into geology or natural history - the kind of person who gets genuinely interested in why cliffs look the way they do. Kids will manage an hour or so if they're the curious type, but this isn't a theme park. You need to engage with what's being explained to get your money's worth.

The beauty of basing yourself at Old Hartley Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, just half a mile away, is that you can visit Rocky Island without it eating up a full day. It slots nicely around coastal walks and trips to Whitley Bay proper. Parkdean Resorts Whitley Bay Holiday Park is equally close if you prefer something larger. Sandy Bay, six miles south, gives you more space but means a short drive.

Bring decent shoes - the coastal path can be wet and muddy. Check opening times before you set out, as smaller museums around here can be seasonal. It's free or cheap entry, but worth confirming beforehand. On a clear day, the views across the North Sea add something extra to the geology lesson.
