Rolf's Copse

A proper woodland walk through mature beech and oak, Rolf's Copse sits just outside Newbury and delivers exactly what it promises - peace, shade, and the kind of forest floor that smells like earth and time. The trees here are substantial, old enough to actually feel like something rather than a commercial plantation, and the paths wind through in a way that doesn't feel too manicured or obvious.

It's the sort of place where you could easily spend an hour pottering about, letting kids hunt for interesting sticks or just getting your head straight. The canopy's thick enough that it stays cool even on warm days, which is genuinely useful if you're camping nearby at Hollington Park Glamping and need to escape the sun without driving anywhere.

Walkers will get more from it than casual strollers - there's something properly restorative about being among older trees, and the paths are straightforward enough that you won't spend half the time squinting at your phone trying to work out where you are. Families with younger children might find it a bit repetitive after forty minutes or so, unless they're the type who enjoy a slow woodland meander.

The copse is free and accessible, which is always refreshing. Time it for late afternoon when the light filters through properly - you'll understand why people bother coming back.
