Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway

The Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway is a narrow-gauge steam train that runs for about 13.5 miles across the Romney Marsh, one of England's flattest and most unusual landscapes. It's proper transport heritage - the line opened in 1927 and still operates vintage locomotives and carriages that feel like stepping into another era. You board at New Romney and the train rattles through marshland, past sheep and open sky, stopping at stations with names like Dymchurch and Hythe. The journey takes around 50 minutes end-to-end, though you can hop off at intermediate stops and explore on foot.

Kids absolutely love it. There's something about being on a real steam train - the smell, the noise, the rocking motion - that beats modern railways hollow. Adults who remember branch lines or have any railway enthusiasm will find it genuinely moving rather than twee. The marsh itself is haunting and beautiful in a flat, wide-open way that's nothing like the rest of Kent.

It's not a quick tick-off. Allow a full afternoon if you want to ride it properly and maybe explore one of the stations on foot. The nearby holiday parks - New Romney Caravan Park is barely half a mile away, and Romney Meadows just 1.5 miles - make it easy to visit without rushing. Spring and autumn are best. Summer gets rammed with families, and winter services are limited.

Worth the trip if you're in the area with a caravan. If you're just passing through on the motorway, probably not worth the detour.
