Rookery

The Rookery near Fairford is a proper woodland walk through ancient oak and beech, the sort of place where you actually notice the quiet. It's managed forest rather than wilderness - well-maintained paths wind through dense trees, and you'll spot the occasional clearing where light floods through the canopy.

This is ideal territory for families with older kids and serious walkers. Under-fives might struggle with uneven ground and the lack of obvious "attractions" - there's no playground or café, just trees and birdsong. But if your children can manage a couple of miles on foot without needing constant entertainment, they'll love spotting wildlife and clambering over fallen logs. Autumn's the best time, when the floor erupts in colour and the air smells properly foresty.

Allow two to three hours for a full circuit, though you can do a shorter loop in under an hour. The paths can be muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential. We found it free to access, though always worth checking locally as these things change.

If you're based at Burford Caravan and Motorhome Club or Wysdom Touring Park - both within five miles - this makes a solid morning or afternoon excursion. It pairs well with exploring Fairford's high street and St Mary's Church rather than as a full day's outing on its own. Honest assessment: it's a lovely wood, but nothing spectacular. Worth the drive if you're staying nearby, but not worth travelling miles out of your way.
