Rookery Wood

The woods around Rickmansworth are proper dense, and Rookery Wood is where you go if you want to actually disappear into something green without the crowds. It's an ancient woodland - the sort of place where you spot old coppiced hazel and the ground stays damp even weeks after rain. Dog walkers love it, and you'll understand why once you're in there. The paths are well-trodden but not manicured, which is refreshing.

Worth allowing an hour minimum, longer if you've got kids who like turning over logs and hunting for bugs. It's free to walk, as these things tend to be. The canopy gets proper thick in summer, so it's brilliant on a hot day when everywhere else feels exposed.

From the holiday parks nearby - Whelpley Hill and Fuzzy's Farm are both within easy striking distance - this works nicely as a morning walk before settling into caravan life for the afternoon. Highridge Farm's shepherd huts are a bit further out, but still reasonable. You're in commuter belt here, so it's not remote, but the woodland itself feels genuinely wild. Not somewhere you'd visit twice on the same holiday, mind you, but as part of a Buckinghamshire wander between Three Rivers Way and the Chess Valley, it slots in naturally. The paths connect to broader trails if you want to extend it, which is handy.
