Roots Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Maidstone, Roots Wood offers the kind of quiet corner you stumble into by accident and end up returning to deliberately. The paths wind through mixed deciduous woodland - oak, beech, and birch mostly - with enough variation to keep you engaged without demanding serious navigation skills. You'll find yourself on well-trodden routes that fork and meander, the sort of place where sunlight filters through the canopy and actually makes you slow down. The woodland floor shifts with the seasons: spring brings bluebells in patches, autumn turns everything copper and gold.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the kind of wood where you can spend an hour pottering about without feeling rushed, or two if you're the sort who stops to look at things. Families with younger kids will find it manageable, though there's nothing dramatic enough to hold attention for more than 90 minutes unless they're genuinely into spotting wildlife. The paths are accessible enough, though after rain they can get properly boggy in places.

With Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just five miles away, Roots Wood makes an excellent half-day detour from a park holiday. It's close enough for a morning walk before heading elsewhere, but substantial enough to justify setting aside proper time. No facilities on-site that we're aware of, so bring water and pack accordingly.
