Rostrevor Oakwood

The woodland walk at Rostrevor Oakwood is a proper tonic if you're staying in the Newry area and fancy getting your boots muddy. It's a Victorian-era oak forest that slopes down towards Carlingford Lough, and while it's not exactly remote wilderness, it's genuinely pleasant rambling through mature trees with decent views of the water if you pick the right path.

Most people spend between forty minutes and an hour here, depending on how many side trails you fancy exploring. The ground can be boggy in places - come in dry weather or bring proper footwear - and there are a few decent climbs that'll get your heart going without being punishing. Families with younger kids will manage it fine, though toddlers might find some stretches tedious. History enthusiasts will appreciate that this was planted by Victorian landowners trying to be impressive, and you can still see the hand of old estate management in how the trees are laid out.

It works well as a half-day outing if you're based at Kilbroney Caravan Park just down the road, or as a walking break if you're exploring the broader Mourne Mountains area. The Oakwood glamping site is further afield but worth noting for a comfier base. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so bring what you need. The walk is free and accessible year-round, though winter can turn parts of it into a mud bath. If you're after something more structured or dramatic, the real mountains beckon nearby - but this gives you the woodland experience without the serious elevation.
