Rostrevor Reservoir

The water at Rostrevor Reservoir sits perfectly still most mornings, mirroring the Mourne Mountains in a way that makes you understand why people come back here year after year. It's a proper working reservoir that supplies water to the Newry area, but what matters to visitors is the walking and the views - the kind of place where an hour stretches into three without you noticing.

There's a decent loop walk around the perimeter that takes most people between 45 minutes and an hour and a half depending on pace and how often you stop to take photos. The path is well-maintained and mostly flat, so families with older kids manage it fine, though there are muddy patches in winter that'll test your footwear. The northern side offers the best sightlines across the water towards the mountains - on a clear day you can see properly into County Down.

It's free to access and there's no formal gate or entry point, just pull in near Rostrevor village and start walking. The spot works brilliantly as part of a wider Mourne Mountains break - base yourself at Kilbroney Caravan Park, which sits just half a mile away, and you've got the reservoir for gentle days mixed with proper hill walks on the slopes behind. Oakwood glamping over in the mountains proper is another option if you want something cushier, though that adds distance.

Bringing binoculars is worth the bother if you're into birds. It's not a dramatic destination on its own, but it's peaceful and the light changes everything depending on the time of day.
