Rosy Grove

Rosy Grove is a proper woodland walk just outside Saffron Walden, the sort of place locals know about but visitors often miss. You're walking through mixed forest - oak, birch, the usual Essex woodland suspects - with paths that meander without much fuss or fanfare. There's something refreshingly unpretentious about it. No visitor centre, no café, just trees and the occasional clearing.

It's ideal for anyone who wants a proper stretch of the legs without the crowds you'd find at bigger nature reserves. Families with young children will manage the main paths fine, though it's not a manicured country estate - this is actual woodland, so expect uneven ground and the occasional muddy patch. Walkers after a quick hour's ramble will find it does the job. Birdwatchers and wildlife types might spot something interesting in the quieter sections.

Give yourself an hour minimum, longer if you want to explore all the paths properly. There's no charge and no formal opening hours as far as I can tell - it's open-access woodland. Go in autumn or spring when the ground isn't waterlogged and the light filtering through the canopy is actually nice.

If you're staying at Hidden Gem Glamping just three miles away, this makes a logical morning walk before heading into Saffron Walden itself. Close enough to visit between other activities, far enough removed that you'll feel like you've actually left civilisation for a bit. Not spectacular, but solidly pleasant.
