Rough Hey Wood

Head inland from Preston and you'll find Rough Hey Wood - a proper stretch of Lancashire woodland that feels genuinely off the beaten path. It's not a formal nature reserve with visitor centres or marked trails, just honest forest where you can actually walk without tripping over tour groups.

The wood itself is mixed deciduous, which means autumn here is genuinely worth timing a visit around. Oak, beech, the lot. There are paths winding through, though they're not what you'd call manicured - you'll need decent boots if there's been rain. Wildlife enthusiasts might spot woodpeckers and deer if they're quiet enough, though it's more about the peace than the payoff.

Families with young kids will probably get an hour out of this before the novelty of "walking in trees" wears off. Older walkers and anyone who just wants to vanish into woodland for a couple of hours will find it absolutely fine. There's no entrance fee that I'm aware of, no facilities either - bring what you need.

It's a solid add-on if you're staying nearby at Wilson House Holiday Park, which sits just over six miles away. Close enough for an afternoon escape without burning petrol, far enough that you won't feel like you're in anyone's back garden. Don't go expecting viewpoints or dramatic vistas - this is woodland for its own sake, and that's precisely why it works.
