Rough Tor

The walk up Rough Tor takes about forty minutes from the car park, and it's genuinely worth every step. You're climbing onto Bodmin Moor proper here, north of Launceston, and the views across the moorland are properly wild - especially on a clear day when you can see right across to the coast. The tor itself is a granite outcrop with genuine character, not just a pile of rocks. There's a medieval chapel ruin up here too, which gives the whole thing a bit of history without feeling museum-like.

It's a walker's destination, full stop. Families with older kids will manage fine if they're used to uneven ground and the occasional scramble, but this isn't a stroll. The Cornish moor can be bleak and exposed, so weather matters - come on a soggy day and you'll wonder why you bothered. Late spring or early autumn is ideal, when the light's better and the wind slightly less vicious.

Free access, as with most Bodmin Moor walks. Allow two to three hours if you're not rushing and want to take in the views properly. The nearby camps - Ekopod, Camp De Lank, Trewithen Farm - are all within five miles, making this a solid half-day excursion from a holiday park base. It's the kind of walk that reminds you why people actually come to Cornwall for more than beaches.
