Round Hills Holt

Round Hills Holt is a proper woodland walk just outside Horncastle, the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a small forest - nothing vast - but the paths are decent and it feels genuinely peaceful even when you'd expect crowds. The trees are mixed, mostly beech and oak, and in autumn the carpet of leaves makes it worth the trip alone.

You're looking at maybe an hour to two hours depending on how slowly you move and whether you actually sit down on one of the benches dotted about. The terrain is manageable - not steep, though it can be muddy after rain, so proper footwear matters. It's free to access, which is always a bonus.

Walkers will appreciate it more than families with young children, frankly. There's no playground, no café, no facilities at all, so it's not the sort of place you linger with a toddler. But if you've got teenagers who'll actually walk without complaining, or if you're a serious rambler after a quiet hour in the woods, this delivers. The Horncastle area is decent for a longer holiday - you're within striking distance of Lincolnshire Glamping and Bain View Glamping if you're after a base nearby.

Go early morning or late afternoon if you want to feel like you own the place. The light through the trees at either end of the day is genuinely lovely, which is really the whole point of a woodland walk.
