Round Wood

Tall pines and birches create a proper woodland corridor near Billericay, and Round Wood delivers the sort of forest walk that Essex doesn't often get credited for. This isn't a nature reserve with interpretation boards and car parks - it's a genuine working woodland where you can actually lose the sound of the A127 for stretches at a time.

The paths wind through dense conifer plantations mixed with broadleaf sections that open out occasionally to clearings. Depending on the season, you'll find bluebells carpeting the understory in spring, or a thick carpet of needles and moss underfoot come autumn. Walkers get the most from this place - plan on 45 minutes to an hour for a decent loop, less if you're just after a quick stretch of legs.

It's free access, no gates to speak of, though there's nowhere obvious to park right at the entrance. Best approach is to check local knowledge before heading out. Families with younger kids might find the paths a bit muddy and root-heavy for buggies, but teenagers who actually want to walk rather than be bored will appreciate it.

Staying at Stuarts Wood Campsite or Barleylands - both very close - makes this an easy add-on to your park holiday. It's the kind of place you visit when you want something real rather than manicured, without needing to drive more than ten minutes. Worth the detour if you're after proper forest, not theme park woodland.
