Rowbarrow Wood

The woodland around Rowbarrow, just outside Bradford-on-Avon, is proper walking country. Dense beech and oak rises up on either side of the path, and in autumn the floor becomes a thick carpet of russet leaves that muffle your footsteps entirely. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - which is precisely why people come here.

This isn't a manicured forest with interpretation boards and café stops. It's genuine woodland that rewards a slow pace. The paths thread through quietly, climbing gently through the trees, and the light filters through in that particular way that makes you forget about signal bars and notifications. Walkers love it, particularly those after a solid couple of hours without needing to navigate technical terrain. Kids will manage it fine if they're used to forests, though it won't compete with a playground.

Allow yourself at least ninety minutes to do it justice - longer if you dawdle, which you will. Spring brings bluebells and primroses; autumn offers that stunning colour. Winter shows you the skeleton of the woodland; summer can feel a bit dense and buggy.
