Rowhill Nature Reserve

Twenty minutes from Farnham, Rowhill Nature Reserve is one of those places that creeps up on you. The walk in is unremarkable - a bit muddy, nothing fancy - but then suddenly you're surrounded by proper woodland with the Wey Valley stretching out below. This is chalk grassland and ancient woodland combined, the sort of terrain Surrey does well but doesn't shout about.

What makes it worth the trip is the sheer quietness. You'll find yourself on narrow paths with the ground alive with wildflowers in season - orchids especially - and the birdsong is genuinely impressive. Summer's the best time, when the reserve explodes with butterflies and the grassland's at its peak. Winter's bleak but oddly lovely if you like that sort of thing.

It's free to wander, no gates or fees, and you can potter about for anything from forty minutes to three hours depending on how you fancy it. Families with older kids will manage fine; it's not a pushchair-friendly sort of place. History buffs might note the Iron Age camp evidence, though there's not much visible to get excited about.
