RSPB Corrimony

You won't find crowds at Corrimony, and that's precisely why it's worth the drive from Beauly. This RSPB reserve sits in the Highland landscape like a proper working nature sanctuary - not a visitor centre with gift shop, just genuine woodland and moorland where serious birdwatchers come to actually see things.

The reserve covers a substantial chunk of ground, with woodland trails that wind through ancient Scots pine and open moorland where golden eagles genuinely do appear. Expect to spot capercaillie if you're quiet and patient, red squirrels darting between trees, and in winter, redwing and fieldfare moving through the undergrowth. Spring brings migrating warblers; autumn sees the place alive with activity. It's not a stroll round a manicured park - you'll be properly walking, sometimes on rough ground.

This is absolutely for keen birders and wildlife enthusiasts. Casual visitors often find it quiet in the less obvious way - there's not much facility-wise, and if you don't know what you're looking for, a silent reserve can feel a bit flat. Families with young children might struggle unless they're genuinely into spotting birds.

Allow three to four hours for a solid visit, longer if you're serious. It's free - entirely free - which makes the lack of commercialisation even more refreshing. Cannich Woodland Camping and Caravan Park sits just 2.2 miles away, so it works well as part of a broader Highland park holiday. Go early morning for the best wildlife activity, and bring proper binoculars. The wind can cut through here, even in summer.
