RSPB Frampton Marsh

The moment you step onto the boardwalk at Frampton Marsh, you're in a different world - flat, vast, and absolutely alive with birds. It's a proper wetland reserve just south of Boston, run by the RSPB, and it punches well above its weight for coastal birdwatching. You get two main viewing areas connected by that boardwalk, each with shelters and benches overlooking pools and reed beds that change character with the seasons. In spring and autumn the passage waders are extraordinary - avocets, oystercatchers, little terns. Winter brings wigeon and pintails by the thousand. Bring decent binoculars or go on a guided walk if you're new to bird identification; the RSPB volunteers know every wing twitch. It's free to visit, and you can easily spend two to three hours here without rushing, though an hour is enough if you're just dipping a toe in. The boardwalk is accessible - no steep climbs, manageable for most fitness levels. Families with older kids who've got genuine interest in wildlife will get something real here. Younger children might find it slow; there's no play area or café, just birds and views. If you're based at Orchard Holiday Park nearby, this makes a brilliant half-day break from the caravan. The big tides in the estuary mean conditions shift daily, so local knowledge counts - check with the reserve team when you arrive and ask where the action is that day.
