RSPB Lakenheath Fen

Lakenheath Fen sprawls across 3,700 acres of wetland just east of Brandon, and it's one of those places where you actually see what all the fuss is about. The RSPB has done proper work here - restored reed beds, open water, wet grassland. You're not just looking at a pretty lake; you're in functioning wildlife habitat.

The walking trails loop through different sections, and binoculars are basically mandatory. Bitterns boom in spring, cranes have nested here in recent years, and you'll spot marsh harriers quartering the reeds if you're patient. Summer brings warblers, winter brings visiting wildfowl. The hides are positioned well - you won't be squinting through trees at distant blobs.

Walkers and serious birders will get the most from this. Casual visitors might find an hour enough depending on conditions and what's actually about. The trails are flat, which is either a relief or a bit dull depending on your perspective. Allow two to three hours if you're taking it seriously, maybe just one if you're sampling.

Admission is free - it's an RSPB nature reserve open to the public. There's a car park and the facilities are basic but adequate. Best visited in spring when breeding birds are active, though winter can be rewarding too.
