RSPB Tollie Red Kites

The red kites at Tollie are properly impressive - these rust-coloured raptors gliding overhead with their distinctive forked tails are a proper sight to witness. The RSPB has set up viewing areas near Strathpeffer specifically to let you watch them hunt and soar without disturbing the birds, and on a good day you'll see multiple birds working the thermals above the moorland.

It's not a destination that demands hours of your time. Most visitors spend 30 minutes to an hour here, scanning the skies with binoculars and waiting for action. Patience pays off though - when a kite dives or a pair circles overhead, you'll understand why birdwatchers get so animated about these creatures. The moorland setting is bleak and beautiful in equal measure, particularly in autumn when the heather's at its best.

This works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Highland Heights or Dingwall Camping and Caravanning Club Site - both within three miles - and want a low-key activity that doesn't require tickets or complicated planning. Bring binoculars and dress for Highland wind. It's genuinely free and accessible year-round, though late afternoon tends to be more productive for sightings. History buffs won't find much here beyond the conservation story itself, but walkers and nature enthusiasts will find it rewarding. Families with patient kids do well; restless toddlers less so. The red kites are the main event, and they rarely disappoint.
