RSPB Valley Wetlands Reserve

Two vast freshwater lagoons stretch across this RSPB reserve just outside Holyhead, created from what was once an old sand and gravel quarry. The transformation is remarkable - where heavy machinery once worked, reed beds now rustle with wildlife and open water reflects the Anglesey sky.

Birdwatchers will be in their element here. The lagoons attract everything from wintering wildfowl to breeding terns, with excellent views from the well-positioned hides. Even novices will spot something interesting - the resident swans are particularly obliging. Spring brings nesting activity, while autumn sees impressive gatherings of migrating species.

Families find it works well too, though very young children might lose interest after an hour or so. The paths are mostly level and pushchair-friendly, making it accessible for most visitors. Pack binoculars if you have them - the birds don't always come close.

Location-wise, it's perfectly placed for a holiday at any of the nearby parks along this stretch of coast. Silver Bay Holiday Park and the various caravan sites around Trewan Sands are all within easy reach. The reserve makes a lovely break from beach days, especially when the weather turns. Allow at least 90 minutes to do it justice, longer if you're serious about your birdwatching.
