RSPB Wallasea Island

The Essex marshes aren't where most people think to look for wildlife drama, but Wallasea Island has quietly become one of the RSPB's most interesting rewilding projects. What you're seeing here is genuinely ambitious - hundreds of hectares of former arable farmland being deliberately flooded and left to do its own thing. Saltmarsh, mudflats, reedbeds. The sort of habitat that's vanished from Essex over the past century.

Walking the paths, you're spotting avocets, spoonbills, marsh harriers. Serious birdwatchers come here and stay for hours with binoculars. Casual visitors find it rewarding too, though it's honest to say there's no grand visitor centre or proper facilities - you're out on the marsh, basically. The vantage points work well enough, and if the light's decent the views across the water are genuinely atmospheric. Winter and spring are best for variety.

Families with older kids who can manage a couple of miles walking will get something from it. Very young children might flag a bit since there's not much to do besides look and listen. It's a proper working nature reserve, not a day-out attraction.

Wallasea sits just east of Burnham-on-Crouch, within easy reach of Sea End Country Park and Silver Road Caravan Park if you're basing a caravanning break locally. Worth combining with other Essex coast walks rather than treating as a standalone stop.
