Rubha a' Chuinnlein

The rocky headland juts out into the Atlantic with a proper sense of drama - this is Rubha a' Chuinnlein, a Gaelic name that rolls off the tongue better than any English alternative. You're looking at a windswept promontory on Islay's coastline, the kind of place where the sea does most of the talking and you spend half your time holding onto your hat.

There's no visitor centre or facilities here, which is rather the point. What you get is raw coastline, dark rocks, and views that stretch across to Jura on a clear day. The walk out to the headland itself takes twenty minutes or so from the nearest access point, depending on which way you approach it. Locals and keen walkers come for the solitude and the seabird spotting - this is proper eagle country, and you might catch sight of golden eagles if you're patient.

It's not a destination that'll keep you occupied for hours. An hour there, an hour back, maybe another thirty minutes standing about looking at the view. But that's fine. Sometimes that's exactly what a coastal walk should be. Families with young children might find it a bit bleak and exposed. Anyone doing a serious walking holiday around Islay, though, should absolutely fit it in.
