Ryarsh Wood

Walking into Ryarsh Wood near Meopham feels like stepping back about fifty years - it's proper old-school woodland, the kind where you might actually lose your phone signal and not mind. The forest is dense with mature trees, plenty of shade, and the sort of undergrowth that makes you feel genuinely away from the A20 that rumbles past nearby. Paths wind through reasonably well, though they're not manicured or signposted to death, which is refreshing.

This is walker territory, full stop. History buffs might find something here too - there's evidence of ancient use in the area - but come for the peace and the trees, not for marked viewpoints or visitor facilities. Families with older kids who don't need a toilet every twenty minutes will do fine. Toddlers will get bored within an hour unless you're really enthusiastic about moss.

It's free access, as you'd expect from an unlicensed wood. There's no formal car park, just a few spots you can pull into, and honestly that's part of its charm. Allow an hour to ninety minutes for a proper walk depending on how deep you want to go. Spring's excellent - the woodland floor comes alive - but it's decent year-round if you don't mind mud.

If you're camping at Badgells Wood or Gatehouse Wood just down the road, Ryarsh is an easy morning or afternoon jaunt. It won't eat up your whole day, but it's the sort of quiet add-on that makes a park holiday feel less like you're just sitting still and more like you're actually experiencing the Weald properly.
