The name comes from its distinctive shape - the trunk splits in a way that genuinely does look like a saddle, and you can understand why locals used it as a navigation point long before signposts existed.

It's the sort of place that rewards a quiet detour rather than demands a special trip. The tree itself is impressive enough if you're into that sort of thing - genuinely old, characterful, with thick spreading branches. The surrounding landscape is proper Wiltshire downs, rolling and open, which gives the whole visit a sense of scale.

Walkers will get the most from this. It sits nicely on routes across the downs, and the approach across fields is straightforward enough. You won't need more than twenty minutes unless you're the type to sit and sketch or take dozens of photographs. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming - it's just a tree, after all - though the open countryside around it is grand for running about in.

If you're camping at Totteridge Farm, Hillview Park, or Ridgeway Campsite nearby, it's absolutely worth the short drive or bike ride over. Pair it with a walk across the downs and a pint in Pewsey afterwards. Don't go out of your way specifically for it, but if you're in the area, the fifteen minutes it takes won't disappoint.
