Sadler's Big Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured attraction, Sadler's Big Wood sits just outside Bishops Castle in the rolling Powys countryside. Think mixed deciduous forest - oak, beech, ash - with decent footpaths threading through, not some theme park version of nature. You're looking at a couple of hours maximum, less if you're not the lingering type, though the wood rewards a slow pace if you've got it.

It's the sort of place families with restless kids might find useful for burning off energy, though there's nothing fancy to keep them entertained beyond trees and the occasional stream. Walkers and anyone who just wants to disappear into proper woodland for a bit will appreciate it more. No visitor centre, no café, no admission fee as far as we can tell - just access to the trees themselves.

The real draw is how close it sits to Bishops Castle town itself, making it dead convenient if you're based at Foxholes Campsite or Woodbatch Camping just down the road. Pair it with exploring the market town, then push on to the bigger hill walks in the Shropshire Hills if you're after something more substantial. It's honest work - nothing Instagram-ready, but genuinely pleasant if you're after a break from the caravan or cabin without needing to plan much. Bring decent boots if it's been wet.
