Salmon of the Wye

Five enormous salmon sculptures leap from the pavement in Ross-on-Wye's town centre, each one decorated by a different local artist. The Salmon of the Wye public art trail celebrates the River Wye's famous fish runs that once brought prosperity to this market town.

Walking between the sculptures takes about twenty minutes if you're dawdling with a camera. Each salmon tells part of the river's story - from medieval fishing weirs to modern conservation efforts. The artwork's proper striking against the Georgian shopfronts, and kids love spotting the different designs.

Families will find this works brilliantly as a quick distraction before or after exploring Ross-on-Wye's other attractions. It's free, obviously, and you can see everything in under an hour unless you're particularly keen on reading every information plaque.

The sculptures sit well with a longer Wye Valley break. Broadmeadow Caravan Park is just ten minutes' walk away, making it easy to pop into town for supplies and salmon-spotting. If you're staying further out at places like Tresseck Campsite or Haywood Farm, Ross-on-Wye makes a decent half-day trip combined with the town's shops and riverside walks. Not earth-shattering stuff, but a pleasant enough addition to any Wye Valley holiday.
