Salter House Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a tourist hotspot, Salter House Wood sits just inland from Stockton-on-Tees and delivers exactly what it says on the tin - trees, paths, and peace. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter in autumn, and the canopy does a decent job of blocking out the surrounding suburbia once you're in far enough.

It's ideal for walkers who want a quick escape without driving miles into the countryside. Dogs get a good run here, and families with younger kids won't be trudging for hours - you can loop round in forty minutes if you're not stopping to watch birds or take photos. The woodland feels properly lived-in by locals, which means the paths are well-trodden but never feel crowded.

There's nothing here in terms of visitor facilities or interpretation boards, so go in knowing you're just getting fresh air and greenery. Spring is lovely when the bluebells appear, though frankly most woodlands look the same in winter. If you're staying at Donnewell Farm Caravan and Motorhome Club a few miles down the road, it's worth a morning visit before heading elsewhere, but don't expect an afternoon's entertainment.

Access appears to be free and the place stays open during daylight hours year-round, though finding the exact entrance can be a bit of a puzzle on your first go. Park sensibly and don't expect signage.
