Saltfleetby - Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve

The dunes here stretch for miles along the Lincolnshire coast, a proper wild stretch of sand and marram grass that feels genuinely remote despite being minutes from Louth. You're walking through a designated nature reserve where the landscape has been left largely to its own devices - tussocky vegetation, shifting sands, and bird life that gets serious birders genuinely excited.

What you actually do is walk. There's no visitor centre, no café, no infrastructure really. Just you, the dunes, and the North Sea in the distance. In spring and summer the wildflowers are decent - sea holly, evening primrose - and the bird populations make it worthwhile if you've got binoculars. Winter's quieter but also bleaker, which some find more rewarding.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with young kids might find the novelty wears off after an hour, if I'm honest - there's a lot of open space but not much to do besides trudge about. Serious nature enthusiasts though, or anyone after a proper coastal walk without the crowds, will rate it highly. It's free and open year-round.

The nearby Mablethorpe Camping and Caravanning Club Site puts you equally close. Worth pairing with a visit to Louth itself, which has proper character and a market square worth your time.
