Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve

The dunes here run for nearly two miles along the Lincolnshire coast, and they're genuinely wild - proper unspoilt compared to the busier beaches around Mablethorpe. You're looking at a rare mix of sand dunes and saltmarsh that's protected as a National Nature Reserve, which means no development, no commercialisation, just marram grass, shingle ridges, and if you're lucky, some decent birdwatching.

Walking the reserve takes between one and three hours depending on how thorough you want to be. The paths wind through the dunes and down to the beach itself, and it's straightforward enough for most fitness levels, though the sand can be heavy going on a blustery day. Ornithologists and nature photographers absolutely love it - the wetland areas attract waders and wildfowl year-round, especially in spring and autumn migration periods. Families with young kids might find it a bit sparse for entertainment, but older children who can spot things through binoculars will be properly engaged.

It's free to access, though parking might be limited during peak summer holidays. The nearest proper facilities are in Mablethorpe itself, so plan accordingly. If you're based at Haven Golden Sands or Seymore Glamping just down the road, this reserve makes an excellent morning or afternoon outing - the kind of place you visit for the natural landscape rather than specific attractions. Go early or late in the day to dodge crowds and catch better light for photography. Weather-dependent, but worth the visit if you actually care about seeing Britain's coast as it should be.
