Saltmarsh Coast Trail

The walk along Saltmarsh Coast Trail near Burnham-on-Crouch is about as close as you get to proper Essex coast without fighting your way through a built-up seaside town. Bring binoculars if you're serious about birdwatching; bring decent waterproof boots if you want to explore off the main path. The trail itself is accessible enough, though it's not a manicured park loop - it feels genuinely wild in places, which is part of its appeal. Expect it to take two to three hours if you're not rushing, less if you're just wanting a quick leg-stretch.

This works best for walkers and nature enthusiasts rather than families with restless toddlers. Kids old enough to identify a redshank or spot a seal will find it genuinely interesting. The nearest caravan parks - Silver Road and Sea End Country Park are both within a mile - make this a natural base for a week or two exploring the Essex coastline, though frankly the Essex coast rewards a bit of patience. You won't find dramatic cliffs or golden sand, but you will find something quieter and more authentic. Worth a morning or afternoon if you're already in the area.
