Sandon Park

Sandon Park sits just outside Stafford and offers a proper woodland escape without the crowds you'd find at bigger nature reserves. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - mature trees, open grassland, and enough paths to keep you occupied for a couple of hours without feeling like you've walked a marathon.

The reserve works well for a mixed bunch: families with younger kids will appreciate the manageable scale, walkers want something straightforward rather than challenging, and birdwatchers occasionally get excited about what's about. There's genuine woodland habitat here rather than manicured parkland, which means it feels less tame than you might expect so close to town.

Bring decent shoes because it can get muddy after rain - this isn't a polished attraction with gravel paths. The walk around takes most people between ninety minutes and two hours depending on how often you stop. There's no great facilities to speak of, so bring your own refreshments.

If you're based at Stable Park Holiday Park or Poppy Fields Glamping nearby, Sandon makes a solid half-day jaunt. It's close enough that you won't waste an afternoon driving, but far enough removed from the caravan site hustle that it actually feels like you've gotten away. Worth a morning visit if you're in the area - not somewhere you'll travel hours to reach, but genuinely pleasant once you're there.
