Sandpit Copse

The woodland around Sandpit Copse is one of those quiet corners of the Isle of Wight that most visitors miss entirely, which is rather the point. You'll find decent walking trails threading through mature beech and oak - nothing dramatic, but proper woodland walking with enough canopy to keep things cool even when the rest of the island is baking. The forest floor is soft underfoot and there's genuine peace here, the kind you don't get at the busier spots near Ventnor just a few miles north.

Walkers and families wanting something low-key will find this worthwhile. It's not a destination attraction - no visitor centre, no café - but it works brilliantly as a half-day outing or a morning ramble before heading elsewhere. The paths are manageable for kids who are reasonably confident on their feet, though it can get muddy after rain. Allow an hour or so to potter about properly without rushing.

If you're based at Warren Hill Camp, you're perfectly positioned for exploring this. It makes sense as a gentle break from beach time - a chance to stretch the legs without the crowds that gather at more famous forest walks elsewhere on the island. Bring proper footwear and don't expect signage to be brilliant; stick to the main paths and you'll be fine. Go on a weekday morning if you can and you might not see another soul.
