Schoolhouse Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Presteigne, Schoolhouse Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon and wonder why it's not rammed with people. The forest floor is thick with moss, the trees close enough that you feel genuinely tucked away from the world, and there's enough of a path to follow without it feeling like a theme park trail.

It's ideal for families wanting a couple of hours in the trees without committing to a full day's hiking. Kids seem to love the slightly wild feel of it - the fallen logs are brilliant for climbing, and there's enough variation in the terrain to hold attention. Walkers based in the area will find it a solid warm-up or a decent break between longer routes across mid-Wales. The forest isn't vast, so don't expect to get properly lost, but that's rather the point.

Access appears to be free and open to the public, though there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - bring water and a decent pair of boots. Winter's when the mud gets properly serious, so spring through autumn is your window. Allow 90 minutes to two hours depending on pace and how much time the kids need to clamber about.

If you're based at either Presteigne Holiday Park or Hush Hush Glamping nearby, this is absolutely worth a morning out. Close enough for a quick trip, far enough into the trees to feel like you've actually gone somewhere.
