Scrubb's Copse

A proper woodland walk through Hampshire's quieter side, Scrubb's Copse near Alresford is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. Ancient beech and oak dominate the canopy, and on a clear day the light filters through in that way that makes you understand why people bang on about forests. The paths are well-trodden but rarely crowded - you'll see dog walkers and the occasional runner, but it never feels rammed.

It's ideal for anyone needing an hour or two away from things. Families with younger kids will find the woodland accessible enough, though there's not much in terms of facilities or designated play areas, so set expectations accordingly. Serious walkers will appreciate it as a solid leg-stretch between other attractions in the area. History buffs get something too - Hampshire's woodland management goes back centuries, and if you know what you're looking at, the forest structure tells that story.

There's no visitor centre or admission charge as far as we can tell, which keeps things refreshingly straightforward. Allow 45 minutes to two hours depending on how far you fancy going. The ground gets muddy after rain, so decent boots are a good call.

If you're based at Hampshire Hills just down the road - a genuinely well-rated campsite - Scrubb's Copse works perfectly as a morning or late-afternoon outing. It's close enough that you won't waste your day getting there, but proper enough woodland that it feels like an actual walk rather than a lap around a car park.
