Scutchditch Wood

The woodland around Scutchditch is proper walking country. Deep in the borderlands between Herefordshire and the Welsh edges, this is the sort of place you stumble into rather than plan for - the kind of forest that rewards a morning ramble with good air and the occasional view back towards Presteigne. The trees are dense enough that you'll feel properly away from things, but it's not so remote that you're battling through undergrowth for hours.

Walkers will find the most here. The paths aren't signposted to death, which is either refreshing or annoying depending on your mood and map-reading skills. It's the sort of woodland walk that takes two to three hours if you meander properly, less if you're just after a quick stretch of the legs. No facilities to speak of, so bring a flask and snacks.

Historically it's unremarkable in the way many of these stretches of countryside are - just good, solid forest that's been here for ages. That's actually the appeal. There's no interpretation boards or visitor infrastructure, which means it feels genuinely wild rather than heritage-managed.

From any of the holiday parks within five miles - Rockbridge Park, Hush Hush Glamping, or Presteigne Holiday Park - it's an easy drive or a decent morning's navigation on foot if you're into that sort of thing. Worth adding to a park-based holiday if you want to get off-piste for a few hours. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after an hour, unless tree-spotting genuinely excites them.
