Segedunum Fort Viewing Tower

The viewing tower at Segedunum Fort gives you a proper sense of scale when it comes to Hadrian's Wall. You're standing on the eastern end of this colossal Roman defence line, and from up top you can see where it once stretched all the way west across the country. The fort itself - one of the largest on the Wall - spreads out beneath you, with the remains of barracks, a bathhouse, and administrative buildings visible in the excavated areas below. It's the kind of viewpoint that actually teaches you something rather than just offering a nice photo opportunity.

Walkers and history types will find the most value here. You can spend a good hour exploring the fort and the tower itself, though if you're just after a quick look, twenty minutes does the job. The tower gives you height enough to understand the Roman layout in a way ground-level wandering never quite does. From Whitley Bay, it's barely more than a village walk away, making it an easy half-day addition to a park stay at Parkdean Resorts.

The museum on site fills in the gaps nicely - weapons, pottery, coins - all the bits that make a ruin come alive. Best visited when the light's good and the wind isn't too vicious; the tower can feel a touch exposed on a rough day. It's worth the climb if you're genuinely interested in Roman Britain; less compelling if you're just after a coastal viewpoint.
