Segedunum Roman Fort & Museum

The reconstructed gatehouse towers over you as soon as you arrive at Segedunum - it's the sort of moment that makes Roman history actually feel real rather than just something from a textbook. This is the easternmost fort of Hadrian's Wall, and the museum does a proper job of explaining what life was like for the soldiers stationed here nearly two thousand years ago.

You get the full experience: walk around the actual fort remains, climb the replica tower for views across the Tyne valley, and then spend a good hour in the museum looking at finds from the site. Pottery shards, coins, weapons - the kind of stuff that genuinely makes you think about the person who dropped them. It's free admission, which is refreshing, and you can easily spend two to three hours here without feeling rushed.

It's brilliant for anyone with more than a passing interest in Roman Britain, and older kids who can engage with the interpretive panels will find it compelling. Younger children might get restless unless you're actively keeping them entertained with the hands-on bits and the tower climb. History enthusiasts will want to work it into a larger Hadrian's Wall itinerary - Segedunum is just one stop along the wall, but it's the one with the best museum facilities.
