Segontium Visitor Centre

The Romans left their mark on Anglesey, and Segontium Visitor Centre tells that story properly. Located on the edge of Caernarfon, this museum sits right where a proper Roman fort once stood - you can actually walk the same ground the legionaries did nearly 2,000 years ago.

Inside, you'll find artefacts that genuinely transport you back: pottery shards, coins, jewellery, and tools that survived centuries buried in Welsh soil. The displays explain how this outpost functioned as a crucial garrison, controlling this corner of the empire and keeping watch over local tribes. It's low-key stuff - nothing flashy - but that's rather the point. The centre respects the archaeology without overdoing it.

History enthusiasts will spend a solid hour here, turning objects over in their minds and reading the context panels properly. Kids aged eight and up might engage, especially if they're already into Romans; younger ones could find it a bit text-heavy. Adults visiting Caernarfon Castle nearby (it's walkable from here) should absolutely slot this in - the two visits complement each other nicely, showing Roman and medieval Wales side by side.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Coed Helen is barely half a mile away - this makes an excellent rainy-day option or a quieter alternative to the busier castle attraction. Allow an hour minimum, longer if you're thorough.
