Families with older kids might get something from it, but younger ones could find it underwhelming after twenty minutes or so - there's limited interpretation on site. You're free to explore, which means no entrance fee and no time constraints, though the walk from Hexham itself is worth factoring in.

Allow a couple of hours if you're thorough, less if you just want a quick look around. Spring and autumn are best - the light picks out the earthworks better, and you won't be battling summer tourist crowds or winter mud. The site works well as part of a broader Northumberland walking break. Base yourself at one of the nearby glamping options - Sycamore Glamping Pods or Northumberland Nook are both within striking distance - and combine it with walks along the Tyne Valley or visits to Hadrian's Wall, which dominates the region's archaeology. Settlement gives you something quieter and less trampled than the Wall's most famous sections, which frankly can feel overrun.
