Sever Hill Wood

The woodland floor here is thick with moss and leaf litter, the kind of place where your footsteps go completely silent. Sever Hill Wood sits just outside Northallerton and offers a proper escape into North Yorkshire beech and mixed forest without the crowds you'd fight at more famous woodland walks.

It's the sort of spot where you can actually hear the birds instead of other people's playlists. The canopy gets dense enough that even on drizzly days it feels almost protective rather than miserable. Walkers will find genuine peace here - a few quiet miles threading through the trees with minimal elevation gain, though the paths can be boggy after rain so boots are worth the bother.

Families might find an hour or so here pleasant enough, but honestly, it's not a destination that'll hold kids' attention for a full afternoon. No playground, no water feature, just trees. That said, if you're after a morning ramble before heading to Whorlton Pods for the evening, this does the job without requiring a special journey.

The big advantage is proximity to Northallerton if you need supplies or a decent lunch before or after. Free to access, no visitor centre or facilities that I could find, so come prepared. Best visited when the paths have had a dry spell - visit in autumn and you'll get some colour without the summer mud.
