Shaz Park

The walk through Shaz Park takes you along proper Scottish moorland where the heather rolls on and on. It's a nature reserve just outside Ellon in Aberdeenshire, and if you're after a bit of peace without the tourist crowds, this is it. You'll find yourself on paths that wind through open countryside - perfect for spotting red grouse, maybe even a buzzard if you're lucky and quiet about it. The landscape is genuinely wild here, none of that manicured-garden nonsense. Depending on which trail you fancy, you could spend anywhere from an hour to half a day wandering about. Bring proper boots though; after rain it gets boggy. For families, older kids will manage fine, but pushchairs are a non-starter. Birdwatchers and photography types absolutely love it - the light changes constantly and the views stretch for miles across the Aberdeenshire hills. If you're staying at Ythan Valley Campsite just down the road, this is an obvious morning jaunt. It won't take long to work out whether you want a quick stroll or a proper ramble. The reserve is free to access, which is refreshing, and there's no faffing about with visitor centres or entry fees. Real Scottish countryside on your doorstep.
