Shell Grotto

Walking into the Shell Grotto near Birchington feels like stumbling into someone's Victorian obsession made permanent. The interior is completely covered - walls, ceiling, archways - in around 4.6 million shells arranged in intricate patterns. It's genuinely odd in the best way.

The grotto itself is a tunnel system descending about 12 metres underground, leading to a central chamber. You move through it slowly, trying to take in the detail without bumping your head on shellwork. The craftsmanship is remarkable, even if the original purpose remains a mystery - was it Victorian folly? Earlier smuggler's hideout? Nobody quite knows, and that mystery adds to the appeal.

It's brilliant for anyone who likes curiosities and quirky British history. Kids find it fascinating for about 45 minutes, though the novelty wears off once they've seen the main chamber. History enthusiasts will spend longer studying the construction and theories about its origins. Adults appreciate the sheer weirdness of it all.

Admission is required but costs are minimal. Allow around an hour for the full experience, including the small museum upstairs that provides context. The grotto is cool year-round - literally, so a jumper helps.
