Shellbeach

Wild winds whip across this stretch of Kent coastline where Shellbeach lives up to its name in spectacular fashion. The shoreline here is absolutely carpeted with shells - cockles, whelks, periwinkles and razor clams create a natural mosaic that crunches satisfyingly underfoot. It's proper beachcombing territory.

Families with shell-obsessed children will have a field day, though the beach can feel quite exposed when the weather turns. The lack of facilities means bringing your own refreshments is essential. On clearer days, you get decent views across the Thames Estuary, but don't expect palm trees and deck chairs - this is raw English coast at its most authentic.

Walkers covering the Saxon Shore Way will find this a rewarding detour from Sheerness, particularly at low tide when the shell deposits are most extensive. Dog owners love it too, as there's plenty of space for four-legged friends to charge about.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Muswell Manor or Harts Holiday Park puts you within easy reach, making it a good spot for an early morning constitutional before the crowds arrive. The beach works best as part of a longer coastal exploration rather than a destination in itself. Allow an hour for a proper poke around, longer if the kids are in full collecting mode.
