Shepherd House Garden, Inveresk

The walled garden at Shepherd House sits quietly on the edge of Inveresk village, just outside Musselburgh - the kind of place you could easily miss if you weren't looking for it. But that would be a shame. Behind those sturdy stone walls lies a proper gem of Scottish gardening, with herbaceous borders that actually make you stop and take notice rather than shuffle past. The garden feels lived-in, which it is - a working space rather than some polished show garden. You'll find yourself wandering between the beds, spotting unusual plants tucked into corners, and getting that small thrill of discovering something real. It's the sort of place where gardening enthusiasts could easily spend two hours, while others might feel done in forty minutes. The bones of it are lovely - mature trees, good bones to the design, and enough going on to make repeated visits worthwhile through the seasons. What makes it work is the complete lack of pretension. No café, no gift shop, no PA system telling you where to shuffle next. Just a garden. If you're staying at Haven Seton Sands just down the road - and it's well worth the trip for the beach access and family facilities - Inveresk is perfectly placed for a morning poke around. Combine it with a walk around Musselburgh's historic high street and you've got a proper half-day sorted. Bring proper shoes though. The paths can be muddy even after dry spells.
